Comparadun Dry Fly

No comments yet

Comparaduns are adult mayfly dry flies that do not use hackle, but achieve buoyancy with the use of a heavily stacked deer hair wing. Deer hair is hollow, and therefor holds air inside each strand. So when tied onto flies, it does increase its buoyancy. The way these are tied in, creating a fan wing, helps stabilize this fly in the water. This keeps it laying upright quite well, in fact even better than some hackled dry flies. I rarely get these landing and staying sideways or upside down. They usually right themselves quickly.

With the price of hackle seeming to increase every year, these comparaduns are really great patterns to master. With just a $7 swatch of deer hair, and some dubbing, you can tie up a couple dozen of these flies. Granted a single hackle cape or saddle can tie thousands of flies, the initial cost of investment for a good dry fly hackle can run you $65 on the low end, up to $300 on the higher end (some even more). This is especially true on the smaller hackle sizes, like ones that can tie a size 16 or smaller. Instead, you can buy 3 swatches of quality comparadun deer hair for $20 in different colors and tie a wide range of colors and sizes of comparaduns.

These aren't just great for their cost effectiveness, they are also very effective flies in the water. I fish them and I own hackle. So these aren't just for beginners who dont want to spend money on hackle, they can be go to flies in the right situation, out-fishing other dry fly patterns. These sit rather low in the water, perfectly mimicking an emerging mayfly. This means they are also more visible to the trout. You can also tie these with different color abdomens and wings, and change up the materials for the abdomens as well, creating flies that represent other aquatic bugs like midges, tricos, caddis and more.

Make sure you check out my sponsor Risen Fly. They have amazing deals on hooks and beads, but also sell some of the best fly rods Ive ever used, and at a price that is very reasonable. With the cost of fly fishing going up every year, it's refreshing to find great quality gear at prices we can all afford. Best off they are offering all of you a discount just for being my subscriber. So go to www.risenfly.com and type in McFly at checkout for 15% off your first order with them.

Also dont forget to pick up one of my fly boxes. I have both magnetic backed and silicone backed, if these sell well I plan on getting more styles as well and maybe even bringing back the shirts that everyone loved years ago. Check out my amazon store front to pick up the boxes. - www.amazon.com/shops/McFlyAngler

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
See more details about what you can do to help in this blog post.

The Global FlyFisher was updated to a new publishing system early March 2025, and there may still be a few glitches while the last bits get fixed. If you meet anything that doesn't work, please let me know.
